Quincy Troupe: The Architecture of Language

The investigation of American poetic languages, cross fertilized with the racial and ethnic groups of America; White Americans, African Americans, West Indians, Jewish Americans, Asian Americans, etc. The course will look at how dramatically American poetry has changed since the 1950's and upward.

We will examine the poetry of Langston Hughes, Melvin Tolson up through the New York School of Poetry, Black Arts Poetry. We will probe the works of Amiri Baraka, John Ashbery, Jorie Graham, Victor Hernandez Cruz, Derek Walcott, Marilyn Chin, Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, Jayne Cortez, Kevin Young, Terrance Hayes, Ntozake Shange and others.

While investigating traditional and new poetry; we will look at how the new poetic language of the 21st century is evolving but is rooted in the past. We will consider the influence of music and poetry covering jazz, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, salsa, country, bluegrass, rap, etc.

This course will not meet weekly but will be coordinated with Mr. Troupe's touring schedule. Mr. Troupe will post the class schedule during the course.
